Digitization and sustainability are two of the main drivers of the future of the economy and society. With this theme as a backdrop, NEORIS, a global digital accelerator with more than 22 years of experience, participated in the CIONET Vocento 2022 Awards ceremony that recognizes, for the second consecutive year, the best projects and main leaders in digital transformation. The event, held at the Spanish mass media company Vocento Editorial Group headquartered in Madrid, brought together personalities from the technology sector and their talented teams, in a unique event with more than twenty award categories.

María González Veracruz, Spain’s new Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, spoke before the awards ceremony, and a round table was also held on Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) as a new digital accelerator. The debate was moderated by Nils Fonstad, Researcher at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research, and included the participation of Luis Álvarez Satorre, President of NEORIS EMEA; Miguel Álava, General Director of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Spain and Portugal; Inés Juste, President of the Juste Group and Vice President of the Spanish Confederation of Business Owners (CEOE); and Silvia Roldán, CEO of Metro de Madrid and Vice President of the Europe Metros Committee of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP).

During the meeting, Luis Álvarez highlighted the importance of Research & Development & Innovation (R+D+i) along with the role of technology in fulfilling the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “At NEORIS, we carry out the ESG strategy around three themes: the environment, governance, and social impact. As a digital accelerator, we translate transformation programs into quantifiable metrics. We also create scorecards around the ESG objectives and identify automation processes to reduce carbon footprint. From an internal perspective, we also work with objectives favoring gender equality and ethics.”

During the round table, the main issues surrounding ESG strategy were discussed and answers were given to questions including: What do sustainable objectives mean? How are companies measuring them? What do senior management teams within companies need to fully understand technology?

Regarding the last question, Luis Álvarez pointed out that “at NEORIS, we have the recipe to help management teams understand how to apply technology and sustainability. First, it is necessary to promote curiosity in the members of the board of directors. Second, we must ensure that those of us with responsibility in the IT world have a voice in the council. And third, but not least, we need partners to help us throughout the process. It is key to experiment based on internal expertise.”

Sustainable technology to transform the world

The world is changing and this is transforming the way we do things. The massive consumption of natural resources, the increasing generation of waste and the visible negative effects of climate change are some of the results of these changes.
